EMMA VINCENT, 87, TAKEN BY DEATH
Valley Pioneer Had Resided In Ellensburg Since 1887
Mrs. Emma Vincent, 87, widow of the late L. A. Vincent of Ellensburg, died at her home at 201 North Sprague street last night following an illness of about a week.
Mrs. Vincent, a resident of Ellensburg for the past 62 years, was born in Livingston county, Illinois, on March 23, 1862. She married Mr. Vincent in Columbia, Kan., in 1880 and they came to Ellensburg in 1887.
She was a life-long member of the Methodist church and a member of the Rebekah lodge since 1890.
Mrs. Vincent's parents came to the Kittitas valley in 1884 and her father, the late James L. McDowell, was elected county superintendent of schools in the fall of 1888. He was superintendent and was holding a teachers' institute when Washington territory became a state and made the announcement to the teachers assembled after receipt of a telegram.
Vincent was prominent in early day legal activities involving irrigation ditch right-of-ways and water rights. He also specialized in handling estate cases.
Mrs. Vincent is survived by five nephews, Dr. R. A. Weaver of Ellensburg, L. M. Weaver of Sultana, Calif., V. V. Weaver of Wenatchee, Floyd Nelson of Yakima and J. L. Nelson of Seattle, and two nieces, Mrs. Cora Barker of Sultana and Mrs. Iva Jane Arnold of Seattle.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Honeycutt-Evenson chapel. Rev. Hardwick Harshman will officiate and burial will be in the I.O.O.F cemetery.
