Joseph "Wayne" Wilson, 90, of Anderson, passed away July 1, 2010. He died peacefully at home in the company and under the care of his family.

He was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Monroe County to Mason and Mamie Rose Wilson. After working at Thermogas in Anderson for 22 years, he retired to Spencer, Ind., where he lived until coming back to Anderson in March of 2008 to be near family.

Wayne attended Goodwin Memorial Church of the Nazarene (the church is now New Life Church of the Nazarene) for many years, where he was a favorite Sunday School teacher of children. His artwork and story-telling brought the Bible to life for many a young person. He always had a heart for children.

Wilson was a veteran of World War II. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Philippines and Japan.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Butcher) Wilson, whom he married Dec. 29, 1944, and four children, Joyce (Joe) Ellingwood of Anderson, Norma Jean (Doug) Trennepohl, currently of Kosovo, John "Buddy" Wilson, living at home, and Barry (Elica) Wilson of Bourbonnais, Ill. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Mark (Jonda) Ellingwood of Daleville, Ind., Pam (Scott) Matchett of Cicero, Ind., Kim (Blair) Bailey of Rossville, Ind., Nicki (Mark) Royal of Fairmount, Ind., Tara Gillespie of Topeka, Kan., Jude (Terri) Harting of Summitville, Ind., Shaun (Jennifer) Wilson of Ottawa, Ill., and Shanna (Ash) Shomaly of Bourbonnais, Ill. He was grandpa to many great-grandchildren as well as a number of great-great-grandchildren. His prayer as that each one of these, whether born of his blood or related through marriage or adoption, would come to know his Lord and some day meet him in Heaven. Surviving, also, is a brother, Robert (Charlsie) Wilson of Woweka, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Geneva Wilson of Kittredge, Colo.: and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind very special friends, Carmen, Ron and Stephen Shrope of Spencer, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mason and Mamie Wilson; and two brothers, Basil and Paul.

Wayne donated his remains to the IU Medical Center, to be used for research and training purposes.

A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 2 p.m., at New Life Church of the Nazarene, 3615 Raible Ave., Anderson, Ind., with Pastor Alvin Dayton officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to Boys Town, 200 Flanagan Blvd., P.O. Box 6000, Boys Town, NE 68010-9988.
