After graduating from Sullins College, Bristol, VA in 1951 with a diploma in Secretarial Science, she worked in the Panama Canal Zone for two years, where her eldest brother, William Griffin Arey, Jr., served as The Panama Canal Company's Public Information Officer. While residing in the Canal Zone, she attended the University of Panama, specializing in Spanish studies, and was employed in the Office of Civil Defense, Albrook Air Force, CZ, and in The Office of the Captain, Rodman Naval Station, CZ. Returning to the U.S. in 1953, she joined Arey Oil Company in Shelby, NC as Secretary/Bookkeeper.
