Joseph Morgan Hickman was born on 3 September 1859 at Whiteley Twp, Greene County, Pennsylvania He was the son of Jesse A. Hickman and Charlotte Waychoff. Joseph's mother died when he was three years old. He moved frequently as a child with his father and step-mother. By 1880, he finally settled in Mannington, West Virginia, where he lived with his sister Elizabeth and her husband William B. Sine. He married William's niece, Sarah V. Cunningham. He married Sarah Virginia Cunningham, daughter of Henry Harrison Cunningham and Nancy Anne Sine, on 19 August 1884 at Mannington, WV..3,4 He worked a small farm on Flat Run, just outside of Mannington. He also worked as a miner at a nearby coal mine. He fell from an apple tree and suffered a compound fracture and/or back injury. He died of consumption at age 41, leaving 9 children, the youngest 5 months old. He died on 18 October 1900 at Mannington, WV., at age 41. He was buried at Beegum Church Cemetery, Mannington, WV..
