Eliza Jane Anthony was born at Marion, O., April 14, 1852. When she was four the Anthony family moved to Leavenworth, Ind., here she grew to womanhood and was married to Turner Sturgeon. To this union two children were given, Nathaniel of St. Louis, Mo., and Cordia, now Mrs. R. W. Way of Lincoln, Neb.
Sometime after the death of Mr. Sturgeon she met Alvin A. Shaw, and they were married in 1876. Immediately they moved to Sargent, Neb., making the trip by rail to Grand Island, then the end of the railroad. The rest of the distance was covered by wagon.
At Sargent they resided on the farm, and Mr. Shaw became a prosperous stockman-farmer. It was here three children were born, Mona (deceased), Charles and Aden, still living, both of Lincoln. The later posterity number 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
Grandmother Shaw is numbered among the pioneers of Nebraska. She was a member of the Baptist church. She was a very active and energetic woman. She possessed a great love for the flowers and fruits of the garden. Only last year at the age of 87 she tended her own garden, watering it through the dry season and tending the grasshoppers many times a day with a stick.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 30 at 3:30 at Umberger's , L. L. Massie, pastor of the Little Chapel on No. 10th st. officiated. Body laid to rest in Lincoln Memorial Park. Obit includes photo.
