Edward Henry Gertsch was born on May 10, 1895, in Sheffield, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Michael and Margaret Amacher Gertsch.

He had a number of siblings: Frank M Gertsch born about September 1888; Anna M Gertsch born about January 1890; Albert J Gertsch born about June 1891; Lena M Gertsch born about March 1893; Bessie E Gertsch born about April 1899; Herbert W Gertsch born about 1901; Lillian B Gertsch born about 1903; Dorothy L Gertsch born about 1906; Genevieve Gertsch born about 1908; and Lee A Gertsch born about 1911.

Edward Gertsch was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 4, 1918. He was assigned to Co G 317th Inf. 80th from April 4, 1918 to November 15, 1918. He next listed as casual co. from November 15, 1918 - February 1, 1919.

He was in the following engagements: Herbuton from October 2, 1918 to October 8, 1918; Gomitoire from July 23, 1918, to July 28, 1918. He was gassed and had a G.S. wound. Edward Trubic served overseas from May 25, 1918 to December 22, 1918. He received an honorable discharge on February 1, 1919, at Camp Dix, New Jersey.

Sometime after 1940, Edward Gertsch married Margaret Trubic. They had two children: Patricia Gertsch and John Gerry Gertsch.

OBITUARY: Edward H Gretsch

Sheffield - Edwarad H Gertsch, 62 year old resident of 21 South Main street died at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. he had been in failing health for the past five years and seriously ill the past three weeks.

r. Gertsch was born in Sheffield May 10, 1895, and had spent his entire lifetime here. He had been employed as chief inspector for the Knox Glass Bottle Company of Marienville.

Surviving are two children, Patricia Lee and John Garry, of Sheffield; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Anna M Peterson and John Albert Gertsch, Sheffield; Mrs. Lillian Hanson, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Jean Bathhurst, Warren; and Lee Gertsch, Lincon, Ill.

Funeral services at 2:00 p.m. Saturday will be conducted by the Rev. Jack Parsons, of first Methodist church, with internment following in the local cemetery.

Sheffield - Fuenral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday for Edward H Gertsch, the Rev. Jack Parsons, of First Methodist church, officiating. Internment took place in the local cemetery, with military rites in charge off Michael and Nicholas Peroski Post 8755, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the following serving as bearers: Seaward French, Donald Kifer, Joseoph O'Leary, Joseph O'Connor, Floyd Huber and James Hayes.

Attending from away were Mrs. Lillian Hanson, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Jean Bathhurst, David Bathurst, Warren; Mr and Mrs Lee Gertsch; Mrs Dorothy Rabb, Lincoln, Ill.; Mr and Mrs Lamont Peterson, Reading; Mr and Mrs Lamont Peterson, Reading; Mr. and Mrs Clyde Jonson; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson, Mrs. Roland Vauer, Ridgeway.

Note: on his death certificate, Edward H Gertsch was listed as married as well as divorced. His wife, Margaret Trubic, was born about 1924 in Sheffield, Pennsylvania. According to the SSN applications and claims index, Margaret Ann Trubic, was born on September 22, 1922 in Sheffield, PA. After their divorce, Margaret Ann took the surname Russell. Finally in January 1964, she took back the name of Margaret Ann Gertsch. She died in February 1994.

A veteran's headstone had been ordered for Edward Gertsch and should have been placed on his grave.
