George, an African American, was the second of three sons born to Charles B. and Elizabeth (Cole) Allen. His father, most probably a former slave, was born in Baltimore and served as a Private in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, while his mother, who most probably died before 1865, was born free in Pennsylvania.

George was a 28-year-old Plymouth, MA laborer when he married Jennie (Cole) Mellincot, the 35-year-old widow of Allen Mellincot, at Plymouth on June 18, 1884. Jennie, a housekeeper, was the daughter of Frederick and Agnes Cole. George and Jennie’s one known child, a son, was born stillborn on Jan. 17, 1889.

Widowed in 1889, George was 48 when he died of heart disease at Plymouth. Death records confirm his burial at Vine Hills Cemetery.
