Roger V. Halverson, age 71, of 3109 Mero St. Manitowoc, died Saturday July 7, 2012, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wi.
Roger was born on August 24,1940, in the Town of Liberty, son of the late Carl and Irene (Krueger) Halverson. He grew up in Collins, WI, and was a 1959 graduate of Valders High School. Roger met the love of his life, Patricia G. (Brunner) Halverson at age 16 in their Junior year art class. They married at St. Mary's Church in Clark Mills,WI, on August 5, 1961. They lived life with humor and grace, and the world they built demonstrated the strength of their love and perseverance to all who knew them during their 54 years together.
Roger was a strong gentle man, a life-long learner and a born teacher. He studied at the Manitowoc County Teacher's College and taught elementary school at Holy Innocents Catholic School in Manitowoc. He was a great athlete who played football, baseball, pool, bowling and softball, he coached football throughout his time as a teacher. He joined the Manitowoc Police Department in 1972, and became a new kind of teacher in establishing and leading Manitowoc's first Crime Prevention Program in 1979. He retired as a Sergeant in 1997. After retirement, he served as treasurer in the Golden K Kiwanis Club. He became a skilled woodworker who enjoyed crafting toys for his grandchildren. He was a man of deep principles who he dedicated his life to sharing his wisdom with others.
Roger struggled with heart disease during his later life. In 2000, he and his family were blessed with the miracle of a new beginning in the form of a heart transplant. True to his form, Roger and Pat expressed their gratitude by befriending his donor family and by becoming active spokespeople for the Wisconsin Donor Network in 2006, Roger won the Gold Medal for Bowling in the National Kidney Foundation Transplant Olympic Games.
Roger and Pat built a strong loving family during their lifetime in Manitowoc. Roger is survived by his loving wife, Pat; his son Richard Halverson who lives in Madison,WI with daughter-in-law Erica (Rosenfeld) Halverson, granddaughters Katrina and Grace and grandson Nicholas in the United States Air Force in Minot, ND; his son Robert Halverson who lives in Austin,TX with daughter-in-law Jessica Henderson and granddaughter Georgia; and son Ronald Halverson who lives in Oak Park,IL, with daughter-in-law Kristen (Carriveau) Halverson and grandsons Jack and Sam. Roger was preceded in death by their son Russell Halverson in 1968. Roger is further survived by his sister Luan (Halverson) Ibarra of Fort Worth, TX; by sibling-in-laws Mary Ann (Brunner) and Hilary Krueger of Bentonville,AK.; Ronald and Karen Brunner of The Villages,FL; Allan and Janice Brunner of Manitowoc,WI; Gerald and Mary Brunner of Glenbeulah,WI; Pamela (Brunner) O'Connor of Olympia,WA; and Barbara (Brunner) and Lee Owart of Manitowoc,WI. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Leonard Brunner and by nephews Neal Brunner and John Ibarra.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday July 10,2012 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 8100 Brunner Rd.Newton,WI. Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas Apostle at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Rev. David Pleier will officiate. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers (due to allergies) memorials should be made to Roncalli High School.
