TEMPLETON -- Chester J. Dembek, 81, of 1 Old North Road, formerly of Gardner, died at home Saturday, July 6.

He was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Gardner, the son of Frank and Sophie (Morze) Dembek, and had lived there before moving to Templeton many years ago. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1938.

An electrician, Mr. Dembek worked at the former Heywood-Wakefield Co. in Gardner, Eyles Electric Co. of Fitchburg, and other electric companies before he retired in 1984.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as an electrician's mate second class on the USS Dayton in the Pacific. He entered military service on March 31, 1944, at Boston and participated in naval attacks on the Japanese mainland in 1945. Among decorations he received were the American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon with one engagement star. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 27, 1946.

Mr. Dembek was a member of Holy Cross Church in East Templeton and the Knights of Columbus, Otter River Council 2536. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and bowling. He once played semiprofessional football for the Gardner Merchants.

He leaves his wife, Amelia J. (Merkel) Dembek; three sons, Michael Dembek, John Dembek and Francis Dembek; and a daughter, Mary Polchlopek -- all of Templeton; three brothers, Joseph Dembek and Victor Dembek, both also of Templeton, and Leo Dembek of Gardner; three sisters, Frances Pardee and Alice Ducharme, both of Gardner, and Jennie Collier of Templeton; four grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Anthony Dembek, Stanley Dembek and Richard F. Dembek, the last of whom died on Sept. 11, 2000.

A memorial Mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, 26 Lake Ave., East Templeton. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made either to Holy Cross Church, Campaign Fund, 25 Lake Ave., PO Box 418, East Templeton, MA 01438, or to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 1309 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446.
