DANIEL WALSH

(1876 • 1920)

LAST THOUGHTS OF "MOTHER" AS DAN WALSH DIES

Genius Of The Moulders' Trade Suffers Apoplectic Stroke

Dan Walsh is dead.

The news of the sudden death of one of the best known mechanics in Manitowoc was received today with sorrow by scores and hundreds of persons, many of whom had met and talked and laughed with Walsh as late as Monday night.

For "Dan" had been up and about as usual on Monday. He was "on the job" at the Aluminum Specialty company's plant where he was employed as a moulder and was a genius at the business. Returning home at night he had supper and after helping his wife with the housework had sat with her on the back porch step singing and talking about bed time.

Thought Of Mother

Just before retiring the wife stated humming "Suwanee River." Let;s sing that" said Dan. "It reminds me of Old Missouri and mother. Mother was fond of the old song. God Bless her and rest her soul."

That was the last of "Dan" Walsh. At about 3 o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Walsh heard him stumbling about wide eyed and holding on to the bedpost.

"What is it Dan?"

"Well--" he started to reply but that is as far as he got. His power of speech was gone. Apoplexy, diagnosed a physician who was quickly summoned. Mr. Walsh was completely paralyzed on one side and helpless. He lingered until 8:30 last night when he passed away.

Leaves Widow and Child

Daniel Walsh was born in Missouri 44 years ago and came to this city about twelve years ago. Seven years ago he married Miss Delia Knechtel, daughter of Mrs. Eva Knechtel, who with a six year old daughter, survives. There is also a sister, Mrs. Nellie Crystal of Los Angeles. The sister was notified immediately after the stroke and wired she would be here on the first train.

The funeral will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Boniface church, with burial at Calvary. Services will be in charge of the Loyal Order of Moose and the pall bearers will be members of the Moulders' Union.
