Born in Runnemede, the daughter of the late Virgil and Mary Wright Mathis, she was the wife of George Cowan. She had been a Fairfield Twp resident for 28 years and prior to that had lived in Bridgeton and Newport.
She had formerly been employed as a school bus driver with Zimmerman Bus Service in Newport and had also worked at Captain Bill's Seafood and Terrigno's Deli in Bridgeton along with being an AVON sales woman for 13 years.
Mrs. Cowan was an active member of the Bridgeton First Church of the Nazarene and worked as a volunteer at the Church's Bridge Store. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter Karen L. Framer of Harmersville; five sons William M. Vineyard, Jr. and Edward L. Vineyard both of Bridgeton, Donald B Vineyard of Woodbine, Douglas W. Vineyard of Vineland and Rev. Brian S. Vineyard of Wallacetown, Pa.; a sister Eleanor Cook of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepson George W. Cowan of Pittsgrove and a stepdaughter Connie H. McBride of Pittsgrove, 25 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother Virgil Lee Mathis and a grandson Douglas W. Vineyard Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway #77, Upper Deerfield Twp. Burial will be made at Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove Twp. Friends may call on Saturday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
