David was the son of David and Grace (Redneck) Strange Owl. He attended high school in St. Labre and training school in Bismarck, North Dakota. He furthered his education at University of North Dakota in Fargo.

David worked for Northern Cheyenne Tribal Education. He also worked for Tribal Forestry as a firefighter, and as a custodian at First Interstate Bank, where he worked alongside special friends.

David volunteered at the Cheyenne Children Services and the Annual Relay for Life Fundraiser. He was a great fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also an initiated Gourd Dancer and assisted with the care of the Cheyenne Sacred Hat Bundle. He was known for his beadwork.

David will always be remembered for his humor and kindness.

David was preceded in death by his parents, David J. and Grace Strange Owl; his brothers, Alfred and Gordon Strange Owl; and his sisters, Elaine Strange Owl, Nancy Standing Elk and Freida Standing Elk.

At the time he journeyed on, David was survived by two brotheres, seven sisters and their partners, and one sister-in-law, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. His extended families include Rednecks, Killsontops, Fighting Bears, Night Walkers, Youngmans, Pines, Bellymules, Morrisons, Looksbehinds and Littlebirds.
