He was born in Germany where he was a hotel keeper and farmer. Casper came to America on the ship, Tallahassee, which originated in Le Havre, France and arrived in New York in August 1846. He was accompanied by his wife, Barbara Kirchner Voll and his children, Casper Voll, Jr., Margareta Voll Stark, and Gertrude Voll Benkeht. Casper Voll, Sr. and his family settled on a farm east of West Chicago, Illinois near Spring Lake, now a part of Timber Ridge County Forest Preserve.
