John was their only child and his father died when he was 7 years old. His mother remarried Dr. James D. McCurdy and they later went to Oregon and Idaho. John married Emma Cockrell in Platte City, Missouri in 1870 and they moved to Butte City, Montana in 1880 where he became eminent in the legal profession. He served as a representative to the 14th Montana Territorial Legislature in 1885, and served as Butte City Attorney for many years.
State of Montana Certificate of Death, Butte, Silver Bow County, Sept. 26, 1924, lists John Thornton Baldwin as widowed, Attorney, resident of the Acoma Hotel, and buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Informant is James H. Baldwin of 1834 Lowell Ave.
