Heart Attack Fells City's Assistant Fire Chief.
LAPORTE — ASSt. Fire Chief John Witt, 59, of 235 Rockwood St., died at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Nelson Shade Store, at 715 Indiana Ave., where he had gone to purchase tile for a department project.
He had gone to the basement of the store with a clerk and sat down when he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Louis Lazarek.
Firemen administered oxygen in an attempt to revive Witt. Lazarek said he apparently suffered a heart attack. He had been under a doctor's care.
Officials said Chief Witt had been ill about six months with a heart ailment. The body was tak-en to the Haverstock Funeral Home.
He had been a member of the department since June 1, 1935, and had served as a captain for 13 years before his appointment as assistant chief.
He was born August 5, 1901, and is survived by his widow and a son.
