Cissy was born June 10, 1936, in Belzoni, the daughter of Don and Ophelia Gorton.
She was a graduate of Belzoni High School where she was active in basketball and track. Cissy went on to Mississippi State College for Women, MSCW, in Columbus, where she majored in education. Later she attended Ole Miss where she received a master’s in education. She began teaching in West Point, then in Tacoma, Washington, and later at Trinity Elementary School. While at MSCW, she was chosen as “Sweetheart” of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Mississippi State.
Cissy taught at Trinity for 40-plus years before retirement and was loved by all of her students who referred to her affectionately as “Miss P.”
Through her years of teaching, Cissy was recognized with the honor of being nominated for Citizen of the Year, and was awarded the honor of Educator of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Don Jr.; one grandson, Payden (172065471); and her in-laws, Enos and Doris Burt.
Survivors include one brother, Dr. Mack Gorton; two sons, Claude Andrew “Cap” and Cathy, and William Burt “Bill” and Sabrina; five grandchildren, Carson, Conner, Dylan, Kristen and Brandon; and seven great-grandchildren, Bradford, Brighton, Logan, Barrett, Remi, Hudson and Grayson.
