A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of nineteen in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. G, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Chambersburg February 9, 1864, and mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. L, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pennsylvania). On June 24, 1865, as part of a war end consolidation, he transferred to Co. L, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865. A photo of a burial card found online erroneously claims he served with the 22nd Pennsylvania Infantry.
He married Susan A. Fenwick April 10, 1870, reportedly at State Line, Franklin County, and fathered George K. (b. 05/09/71), John McDowell (b. 12/01/70 - per his death certificate; it was likely 1873), Mary Eva (b. @1876), Susan Evelyn (b. 09/28/79, d. 04/04/83), Amanda Kate (b. 09/27/83), and Charles Leslie (b. 04/20/91). On May 28, 1879, he applied for a disability pension and received it. He died at the reported age of 50-4-18 at his home "near Shady Grove", but no obituary other than a brief death notice was found in any online newspaper archive.
On January 28, 1893, Susan applied for a widow's pension and received it. On August 25, 1902, someone ordered a federal-issue tombstone installed on David's grave.
He is easily confused with another Civil War veteran named David Mowen from Franklin County.
