She was the sister of Alford Douglas, Emily Douglas, Robert Douglas, Edward Douglas, James L. Douglas, and George Douglas.
Adelle married Will Whitaker on April 25, 1883, in Tipton County, Tennessee. Will died in about 1893, leaving Adelle with three young children to raise on her own. She did so as a successful corsette saleslady, traveling door to door thoughout Memphis, Tennessee.

MRS. FLORENCE WHITAKER - Short illness is fatal to native of Covington - Mrs. Florence Adelle Whitaker, resident of West Helena; Ark., died at the home of her son, W. B. Whitaker, 686 Keel, yesterday following a short illness. She was 67 years old. Mrs. Whitaker was a native of Covington, Tenn., and was educated in the schools there. She was a member of the Methodist Church and active in church work. She is survived by two sons, W.B. and J.V. Whitaker of Memphis, and a daughter, Mrs. J.B. Herring of West Helena. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 o'clock this morning with the Rev. C. A. Davis officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Union Cemetery, near Hamsonhurst, at 11:30 o'clock with Thompson Brothers in charge. Pallbearers will be L.N., E.H. Roy, Robert, Charles, Hayes, Rex, and Dr. J.J. Douglas.
