First Mayor of Coffeyville, elected 1873.

"Dr. George J. Tallman, one of the oldest settlers in the town, quietly passed away at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon with old age. The funeral will be held at 5 o'clock this afternoon from his late home, 203 West Eighth street, conducted by Rev. Otto of the Methodist church.
The deceased has been failing for some time and for the past few years has not been actively engaged in the practice of his profession.
George J. Tallman was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., July 6, 1824., He was of German descent on the paternal side and of Scotch-Irish on the maternal. Dr. Tallman was in a large measure the architect of his own education. After completing the common schools by his own exertions he graduated from the Jefferson Medical college in Philadelphia, the most eminent institution in the country at that time.
Dr. Tallman moved to Kansas in 1857. He located at Neosho Rapids registered one of the founders of the town. He was a resident of that place when the civil war broke out. He immediately organised a regiment of soldiers and was commissioned major but afterward resigned to accent a position as examining surgeon for the southern district of Kansas, which included all the territory south of the Kansas river. At the close of the war he entered the drug business In North Lawrence. He assisted in organizing the town and was for five years its postmaster.
Dr. Tallman came to Coffeyville in 1871. He immediately began taking an active part in the progress of the town and was elected to the council and was honored by that body by being made its president. After the end of his term as councilman he was mayor, a position which he had been called upon to fill many times while acting in the capacity of president. The deceased was a past master of Keystone lodge 102, A. r. & A. M. His religious views were In keeping with the Methodist creed. He was married in Madison, Kan., to Miss Nini W. Barker in 1858. Ten children were born to the union, only three of whom remain to mourn their father' death. They are Mrs. Storm, Miss Maud and Lawrence Tallman. Mrs. Tallman died June 23, 1899.
Dr. Tallman was especially esteemed for his generosity and kindness. hes was especially noted as a temperance leader."
