James LeRoy Mankins, age 62, of Newton, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at home.

He was born Oct. 14, 1943, in Phoenix, to Virgil and Jesstine (Oneal) Mankins. He married Gloria Schmidt on May 20, 1967, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. James served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne, from which he was honorably discharged. He was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 731; American Legion Post 88; Teamsters; and the HOG Owners Group. James worked at the Manitowoc Shipyards in the early 1970s before becoming an over-the-road truck driver. He worked at Streu Construction for numerous years, before retiring from James Cape and Sons in 1998.

He is survived by his wife: Gloria; two daughters: Marie (Tim Pratte) Popp, Milwaukee; and Sirena Mankins, Wausau; one son: Jessy Mankins, Newton; three grandchildren: Krystal Mankins, Stevens Point; Kelli Cherney, Wausau; and James Mankins, Newton; mother: Jesstine Mankins, Gila Bend, Ariz.; mother-in-law: Monica Pivonka, Clarks Mills; six sisters: Virginia Timineri, Modesto, Calif.; Joeann (John) Hagerty, Gila Bend: Cynthia (Glen) Duvaul, Phoenix; Carol Galvez, Buckeye, Ariz.: Patty (Gary) Hart, Ocean Shores. Wash.; and Judy (David) Diamond, Phoenix: five brothers: Don (Pauline) Mankins, Yuma, Ariz.; Elroy (Annette) Mankins, Hay Fork, Calif.; Delbert (special friend Gloria) Mankins, Gila Bend: Randy Van Denberg, Indio Hills, Calif.; and Joseph Johnson, Taylorsville, Utah; nine sisters-in-law: Mary Isaacson, Manitowoc; Brenda (Keith) John-son, Valders; Susan (Toni) Phillip, Chilton; Marjorie Schmidt, New Holstein; Julie (Guy) Dehne, Newton; Janet (Steve) Kornely, Whitelaw: Ann (Tim) Klein, Manitowoc; Kathy (Ed) Lorenz, Chilton; and Yvonne Mankins, Indio, Calif.; two brothers-in-law: John (Teresa) Schmidt, Texas; and Joe (Doreen) Schmidt, Valders; 65 nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father: Virgil Mankins; his fathers-in-law: Gordon Schmidt Sr. and Harold Pivonka; a brother: LeRoy Mankins; two brothers-in-law: Bob Timineri and Gordon Schmidt Jr.; a sister-in-law: Clara Mankins; and two nephews: James "Jet" Timineri and Paul Johnson.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Pfeffer Funeral Home, 928 S. 14th St., Manitowoc, with services to follow.

A Memorial Ride will be held after the services, from the funeral home to the family's home, 7903 Northeim Rd., after which the family will greet relatives and friends.
