James Terry was the youngest son of Eunice (Warner), and Eli Terry Sr. Throughout his life, George had issues with mental health. George was even legally deemed "shielded in case of commitment of capital offense on the terms of true insanity". George's father Eli, was the first person to institute a system of interchangeable parts, and the first to legitimately mass produce any object in world history. Majority of his father's last will was dedicated to an allotment left to George if he were to ever recover from insanity.
George later relocated from Plymouth to New Haven where he got an education and became a lawyer. He lived in his law office where he died of a stroke suddenly in 1889. His great nephew James discovered his body. George had paid $50 for a plot at Grove Street Cemetery with perpetual care.
