Jack was the son of Lawrence and Lena Bradner of Pocahontas Virgina, he was a 10 year veteran of the U.S. Army and had reenlisted on July 30, 1963 at Camp Howze, Bongilchon South Korea. He arrived for duty in Vietnam on June 05, 1965 where he was assigned to and served with C Company, 1st Battalion, 28th infantry, 1st Infantry Division, USARV.

On May 13, during a combat operation against enemy forces, mortar and artillery support was request during which a round fell short exploding among the friendly forces. PFC Schmitz was killed and Sgt Sgt Bradner was wounded and died from the intracranial injury he sustained.
