Roy E. Draves, 86, of Midland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014. He and his twin brother, Fenton, were born Dec. 29, 1927 in Detroit, sons of the late August and Clara (Kaschefsky) Draves. In 1932 August and Clara moved the family to Midland,. On July 3, 1948, Roy married Coralie Ann Stark of Midland.

Roy was employed with The Dow Chemical Co. as a journeyman welder for 36 years, retiring in 1982. From 1957 to 2009 he was with the Homer Township Fire Department, serving as Chief from 1970 to 1994. He also served with, and retired from, the local Army National Guard.

Roy was an avid hunter, fisherman and photographer, and enjoyed the outdoors with his family on many camping trips around the country. He also loved gardening, and grew a variety of vegetables for many years in two separate gardens close to his home.

Roy is survived by his wife, Coralie; as well as his daughter, Beth (Brad) Koeplinger of Midland; son, Brian (Laurie) Draves of Midland; two grandsons, Ben (Megin) Koeplinger and Brent (Gina) Koeplinger of Midland; and two great grandsons, Logan and Ethan Koeplinger. He is also survived by one sister, Delores Lemcke of Duluth, Ga.; and one brother, Milton Draves of Midland.

Roy's twin brother, Fenton, preceded him in death in 2002.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home, with Elder Dennis Bailey officiating. Friends can visit with the family on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 4-7 p.m., and on Friday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Those considering an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Homer Township Fire Department.
