Eldest of the eight children born to William and Mary E. Churchill, Martha Jane appears with her parents and siblings on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Harrison County’s Blue River Township.

The mother of six children her first—Elsie Lee Churchill—was born in 1888. Her second child, Harry Edgar Morge, was her only child by husband John Morge, a widower whom she married at Depauw on 23 Feb 1890.

Her marriage to Morge soon ended in divorce; they never appear together on a census.

Around 1897 she married again to John Franklin Williams. They appear together on the 1900 census at Indianapolis along with their first child, Herman Churchill Williams.

Three other children were born to them before her husband’s death: Marguerite Elizabeth (Sherman M.) Kitts; Ira Ramon, and William Forest Williams.

On the 1910 census, Martha was enumerated as the widowed head of household in Blue River township where she operated a hotel and grocery store. On that census, she stated she was then the mother of six children, all of whom were then living; her four youngest were living with her.

She died of angina at her residence. Her youngest brother Raymond Churchill was the informant on her death certificate.
