Francis J. Taugher, aged 55, a former resident of this county, but for several years has resided in Oshkosh, was overcome by the heat yesterday afternoon and died at 9 o'clock last night.
He was born and reared in the Town of Liberty, this county. At the age of 17 he began teaching school and taught his home school in Liberty for five consecutive years. He was a brilliant young man and through his own private study he secured an unlimited state teacher's certificate at the age of 22.
He was a candidate for county superintendent of schools in 1898 but was defeated in the convention by Fred Christiansen. In 1905 he was engaged as principal of the old First Ward School which position he held for five years. Mr. Taugher was rated one of the best teachers in the county in his day. He had considerable natural ability and was a great reader.
He was never married and is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Patrick Hayes of Green Bay, Misses Sarah and Agnes Taugher of Milwaukee and three brothers, James of Manitowoc, and John and Thomas at Milwaukee.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from Holy Cross Church in Milwaukee.
