Warren Baldwin McKenzie, 86, of Bryan passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 at Hudson Creek Alzheimer's Facility. A memorial service celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, with Rev. Rusty Hedges officiating. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.
Warren Baldwin McKenzie grew up in Bryan, the youngest of 5 children. His sense of humor was inherited from his mother, Ruth McKenzie; his sense of duty was passed down by his father, Oak Oral McKenzie. The patriotic spirit called him into service while he was still in high school. He joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Pacific arena for two years.
Even though he graduated from Allen Academy once returning from the war, his Stephen F. Austin alum still kept him close to their hearts. He was an integral part in organizing their 50th class reunion.
After his father passed away in 1952, Warren helped his mother continue the family business school, McKenzie-Baldwin Business College. He also earned his business degree from Texas A&M in 1956. He retired as teacher and director of the business college in 1984.
Warren was active throughout his life in several organizations. He served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Secretary-Treasurer of Camp Creek Water Company and Adjutant for the American Legion. Because of his 20 year service to Camp Creek, a pavilion was named after him in his honor.
Much of his free time was spent clearing his plots of land, hunting, fishing, taking flying lessons, learning Spanish, watching football and playing cards with his friends. He shared his love of the outdoors, politics and the Aggies with his wife, Mina Catherine, his daughter, Jan, and his grandsons, Daimon and Ethan. He also enjoyed family reunions and keeping tabs on the family through the "Round Robin", a letter writing circulation that his mother began during WWII.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Oak McKenzie, Jr., and sisters, Mildred Hedges and Mary Thompson.
Warren is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Mina Catherine McKenzie of Bryan; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Alfonso Martinez of Humble; grandsons, Daimon Wingfield and Ethan Martinez, of Humble; sister, Kirby Cordero of San Antonio; and numerous other family and friends.
