Mary Jane Marshall was 4th of the 5 children of Herbert Lowery Marshall and Emma Ann Kennedy. She was born August 31, 1885 on the Swallow farm in Zarah, Johnson County, Kansas. Her early years were spent on the farms Herbert bought in Johnson County. She graduated from high school in Olathe, Kansas in 1900.

Mary Jane and Harvey Lee Machen were married on September 6, 1905 in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. They moved to Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana where Roy Walter was born on July 5, 1906. Their daughter Grace Alice was born October 4, 1909 in Shawnee, Pottawatami County, Oklahoma. They returned to Fort Cobb, where the children enjoyed being with their Marshall grandparents.

In 1923 Mary and the children moved to Oklahoma City where Roy enrolled at Oklahoma City University and Grace enrolled in the high school. Mary later enrolled at O.C.U. as she had decided it was time to complete her education. She worked as an assistant librarian to help with the expenses of having two members of the family in college at the same time. She was a member of the Honor Society and graduated on May 29, 1929 at the age of 43 with a Batchelor of Arts Degree. A clipping from an unknown newspaper was headlined "Grandmother to Be Honored at O.C.U. Graduation Fete" with the comment "Takes Up Education interrupted in High School; Accepts Alma Mater of Son; Hopes to Teach in City Schools."

During her college years Mary won a $25.00 prize for the best theme on Prohibition. The subject continued to be of deep interest to her through the years. She served several years as President of the Caddo County Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Mary was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, holding many offices in the various departments of the Church over the years. The service that she probably enjoyed the most was decorating the church with bouquets of flowers from her garden throughout the years. Her interest in birds was piqued while working in her garden. She became an avid bird watcher, studying their habits and what she needed to plant to bring the birds to her garden. During her membership in the Fort Cobb Flower Club she won many ribbons for her flowers and flower arrangements. When she entered her Oil paintings, hand-painted china, embroidery and other fancy work at the county fairs, she carried away many blue ribbons.

Mary inherited her love of flowers and flower gardening from her mother as she watched and helped Emma create beautiful flower gardens whereever they moved. From her father she inherited his interest in stamps. In later years they spent many evenings "stamping" together after supper. Both of these interests continued throughout her lifetime.

Mary Jane Marshall Machen died on September 15, 1976 at the age of 91 years and 15 days at the home of her daughter Grace Alice Machen Potter in Denton, Texas. Her remains were returned to Fort Cobb to be buried near her parents. She was survived by her daughter Grace Alice Potter, her son Roy Walter Machen, 7 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
