Noted Organist, 87

Prof. Samuel A. Baldwin, former chairman of the music department at City College and internationally known as an organist, died yesterday in Park West Hospital, Manhattan. He was 87 and resided at the Hotel Olcott, 27 W. 72d St., Manhattan.

Professor Baldwin served in the City College post from 1907 to 1932. From 1908 until his retirement he gave semiweekly concerts in the institution's Great Hall. It is estimated that more than 1,000,000 persons attended the recitals.

He was born in Lake City, Minn., and studied in Manhattan until he was 18. He then continued his musical education in Dresden, Germany. Three years later he returned to the United States, but made concert tours abroad throughout his career.

Before going to City College he was organist at a number of churches in this city and Chicago. He also composed organ selections, among them "Vision", a rhapsody. He was one of the founders of the American Guild of Organists.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Jones Baldwin, and a son, Walter D. Funeral services will be private.
