Katy Bell Smith was born of pioneer parents November 19, 1872, and died at her farm home near Nelson, Nebraska, April 10, 1944, at the age of 71 years, 4 months, and 21 days. She grew to maturity near the place of her birth and was actively engaged in the labors incident to pioneer farm life. She attended the public school of her home district and took a limited course in the academy of York College.

She was united in marriage to R.F. Harritt September 2, 1896, at a public wedding held at Pleasant View United Brethren Church of which she was a charter member. She took a lively interest in all the activities of the church during the 65 years of her membership. Although deprived of the privilege of attending the church services because of poor health in her later years, she kept in touch with its work and was a member of the Home Department of the Sunday School at the time of her passing. Four children were born to her, one of which preceded her in death September 11, 1938. The other three, namely: Ralph at home, Mrs. W.C. Noll of York, Nebr., and Mrs. George M. Adams of Doniphan, Nebr., were at her bedside to minister to her needs. She leaves to mourn her passing, beside the above mentioned children, her husband, Robert F. Harritt, three brothers, J.P. Smith of Bigelow, Missouri, H.W. of Lincoln, Nebr., and J.W. Hendley, Nebr.; and three grandchildren.

In her passing her family has lost a kind, self-sacrificing wife and mother, and the community an understanding and sympathetic friend.

Funeral services were held at the Pleasant View United Brethren church (sic) Thursday, April 13, at two o'clock, the Rev. A.P. Vannice of York officiating. Dr. Vannice was assisted by the Rev. Daniel Berger, pastor of the Angus charge. Interment was made at the family lot in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
