In 1974, he took a leave to study spirituality at the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Connecticut. There, he discovered his vocation within a vocation; his interest in medical practice. Father Blyman went back to school, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and obtained his Doctorate of Medicine; specializing in Psychiatry.
He returned to the diocese in 1993. He was assigned as chaplain for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, worked on the staff at Mercy Hospital and maintained a small private psychiatric practice. In 1996, he became vicar for senior priests while remaining on the staff at Mercy, and maintaining a larger private practice. He continued as vicar there until 2001.
In January 2002, he began a half-year tenure as associate pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, West Islip, before becoming pastor at Our Lady of Mercy in June. In 2011, Father Blyman became director of counseling for the Pontifical North American College, a house of formation for candidates for the priesthood as they pursue their studies at various theological universities in Rome.
He is survived by his beloved niece Christine.
