A native of New Hyde Park, he moved with his father to upstate New York. There, he started thinking about his vocation. He returned to Long Island to attend St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary. After St. Pius, he was sent to Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Albany. He was ordained in 1970 and served his first assignment as associate pastor of St. Boniface Church, Elmont.
