VERONA / MADISON - Robert E. Sumnicht, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on Sept. 12, 1925, in Poynette, Wis., the son of Frank and Grace (Cornwell) Sumnicht. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning from the service, he met Eileen Stegerwald and they were married on Feb. 7, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sun Prairie. He ran his own building business in Verona until his retirement in 1995.
Bob was a charter member of the New Glarus Businessmen's Golf League and enjoyed playing there until 2013, at the age of 88. He was also a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. He loved Badgers sports and the Green Bay Packers. Bob enjoyed many seasons hunting with family and friends and spending winters in Gulf Shores with Eileen.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eileen; his children, Laura (Dave) Wipperfurth, Dan Sumnicht and Jim (Debra) Sumnicht; seven grandchildren, Jamie, Amie, David, Lindsey, Sondre, Travis and Shea; and one great-grandson, Dominic. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, with Father Tafadzwa Kushamba officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass on Tuesday at the church.
