Roy R. “FOOF” Mayfield, 92 years of age, became Our Gift to God Thursday September 5, 2019 at University Hospital-Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio. Mr. Mayfield was God’s Gift to Us on July 16, 1927 in Masontown, West Virginia, the son of the late James D. and Letta (Roby) Mayfield.

A resident of Mantua since 1960, he was a longtime member of the Mantua Center Christian Church, and Mantua American Legion Post No. 193. Roy proudly served his country in the U.S Navy both during World War II, and then in the Korean Conflict. In his many years as a member of the American Legion, he assisted with the presentation of honors at funerals of deceased veterans, often alongside of his son David. Roy had been employed as a machinist at National Thread Die Company in Bedford retiring in 1991. Roy loved baseball, and played for the “Babes of 1916” with his wife being the score keeper, playing from the time he was 68 years old to 85 years of age.

On July 3, 1953, he married his beloved wife Myrtle E. Mayfield who preceded him in death on September 19, 2009. He is survived by his devoted children David (Valerie) Mayfield of Mantua, Karen (Ralph) Myers of Wadsworth, Ohio and Pamela (Jeff) Leidy of Virginia Beach, Virginia. 6 loving grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren also survive.

Calling hours will be Tuesday September 10, 2019 at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, 4668 Pioneer Trail at the corner of St. Rt. 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255 from 6:00 P.M.- 7:45 P.M. where his funeral service will then begin. Officiating will be Mr. Kevin Ruscher and Pastor Chad Delaney. Full military honors will then be observed by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, assisted by members of Mantua American Legion Post No. 193. A family burial will take place at Westlawn Cemetery, Mantua Township, Ohio.
