Mary Jean Steward Marshall was the daughter of James M. Steward and Christiana Jarmaine and the second wife of Conrad Marshall. She was born April 21, 1838 in Union County, Pennsylvania. Mary Jean Steward and Conrad Marshall were married on April 9, 1857 in Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio. They were the parents of Herbert Lowery (1858-1947), Amy Lauretta (1860-1949), Ernest Steward (1866-1942), and Walter Alexis (1874-1944).

On October 8, 1866 Conrad, Mary Jean and their first three children arrived in Johnson County, where Conrad bought 32 acres of land in the bend of the Kansas River from the Indians. He later bought a two additional sections of land adjoining his property.

Descendants say that Mary Jean was quiet, sympathetic, a good housekeeper and a good neighbor. At one time she made all the clothes for the family. They were members of the Methodist Church and always had family worship before breakfast with Conrad reading from the Bible in his deep voice.

On November 21, 1884 Mary Jean took her daughter Amy to her son Herbert's home. He was to take Amy to the train station in Kansas City, as Amy planned to visit her Steward relatives in Ohio. After leaving Amy with Herbert, Mary Jean left to return home. When she started home her team, startled by a train whistle, bolted and threw her from the carriage. She was taken to the home of a friend where she died a few hours later at the age of 46 years and 7 months. She was buried in the DeSoto City Cemetery.
