On October 30, 1776, John, 5 days before his 16th birthday, enlisted at Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut as a Private in the State Militia and soon thereafter marched to the Highlands in the State of New York where he probably joined Captain Joseph Abbott's (Pomfret) Company in the Eleventh Connecticut Militia Regiment which had marched to West Chester, New York a month earlier.
While serving in New York on January 12, 1777, John enlisted for 3 years in Captain John Copp's 4th Company, of the 1st New York Regiment in the Continental Service commanded by Colonel Goose Van Schaick. Captain Copp, who intended to recruit from near Fishkill, New York, had been commissioned on December 14, 1776 to enlist a Company in Colonel Van Schaick's Regiment. During this term, John also served in the Regiment's Company commanded by Captain David Van Ness. After this enlistment expired, John, enlisted for The Duration of the War in the same Regiment. On Sunday, June 8th, 1783, discharges were distributed to the men of the Regiment at New Windsor cantonment and they took to the roads forthwith, all except a few who had been disabled by sickness. Private John Allen of Captain Aorson's Company was in the hospital at the time the men of the Regiment left the contonment.
John married, June 1, 1784 or June 5, 1785 at Pomfret, Connecticut, Persis Clark (1767-1846) by whom he had 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters): Elijah (b. 1787), Malinda (b. 1789), Persis (b. 1792), Petsey Crafts (b. 1796), and John (1800-1856).
John and his wife moved soon after marriage to Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York where they lived 3 or 4 years, then to Walpole, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where they lived a few years, and then to Stockbridge, Vermont.
