Opal was a graduate of Independence High School and Independence Jr. College. She began teaching in the Liberty areas one-room school houses. During the war, Opal moved to the Kansas City area and worked in the war effort. On November 24, 1945, Opal married Arthur Mack Ayers in Independence, KS. Opal and Mack were married for 63 years until his death on January 11, 2009.
They moved to the High Prairie area around 1950 where she began teaching in the local small schools in Wilson County and Fredonia until 1969. During that time she received a BS in Education through Pittsburg State University. They then moved to the Wichita area where she taught at the Goddard schools for an additional 20 years. After retirement, they returned to Fredonia in the mid 1990's.

10 Grand Children and 1 step grandson
14 Great Grandchildren and 4 step Great Grandchildren
3 Great-Great Grandchildren and 1 Step Great-Great Grandson
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mack, 2 sisters: Ruby Morton and Ruth Veith, 2 brothers: Paul O'Brien and Dale O'Brien and daughter-in-law, Patsy Ayers.
Cremation has been requested, a memorial service will be held on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the High Prairie United Methodist Church near Altoona.
