Obituary

Dorothy G. (Thurber) O'Connell, at the age of 104, with family by her side, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2019.

She was the wife of the late Robert J. O'Connell for 67 years until his passing in 2008. On September 29, 1914 in Providence, RI, Dorothy was born the daughter of the late John and Rosena (Glanville) Thurber.

Dorothy came from humble beginnings. In the 104 years on this earth, she has lived and seen several historical events that defined and shaped her to be the loving person that we remember her as. As most did for that generation and especially during the Great Depression, she did not graduate high school and instead went to work at a young age.

Dorothy and Robert married on June 14, 1941 and began their life as one. They started a family and for Dorothy, taking care of Robert, the children and house were paramount to her. Although she loved being a mother and watching her children grow, she relished the role as grandmother. She was a kind and gentle woman who spread her love to those around her and was a faithful and devoted Christian to her Lord and Savior, God.

Dorothy's love lives on in her two children, Thomas O'Connell and his wife Nina of North Kingstown, RI, Lillian Viera and her husband Joseph of North Kingstown, RI. Her eight grandchildren: Jennifer Patrusevich, Joy Brooks, Janelle Pinto, Julie Radion, Sarah Viera, Naomi Viera, Denise Sullivan, Debra Leon and her fourteen great-grandchildren: Autumn, Lexi, Daisy, Riley, Troy, (late) Isabella, Juliana, Autumn, Samuel, Ashley Rose, Adam, Hannah, Ricky and Zachary. Dorothy was one of fourteen children, all of which are deceased.

Family and friends may gather at Ocean State Baptist Church, 600 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, RI on Tuesday, September 17 for a 10:00 a.m. funeral service. Burial to follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI
