Born in Cornwall, England to William and Mary Sampson, Joseph (also known as Josiah) immigrated to the United States with his 2nd wife, Amelia Williams Sampson and a number of their younger children on the SS Adriatic to join sons who had already settled in Michigan. He worked there as a miner and died of inflammation of the lungs at Franklin in Houghton County. His place of burial is unknown.
