Son of Louis A. Lovering and Eleanor Hodgman. He served during the Civil War as a private in Company "I", 1st Regiment, Heavy Artillery, New Hampshire. He enlisted September 3, 1864, in New Hampshire, and was discharged on June 15, 1865, in Washington D.C. He was married twice, the first to Miraett Clarissa Carter, who died in 1902, and the second to Julia Lauzon Chausse, widow of Ernest Chausse, in 1924, in Burlington, Vt. He was age 80 and she was 61.

From the 1870,1880, and 1900 federal census for Errol, New Hampshire, Alvin and his 1st wife Miraette had the following children:
1. Elmer Lovering
2. Nellie Lovering Brodie
3. Maud Estell Lovering Beecher
4. Lewis A. Lovering (1876-1921)
5. Angie Lovering (1879-1884)
6. Earl Wayne Lovering (1881-1947)
7. Ira F. Lovering (1883-1907)
