Those who knew Rosemary Layson Adams knew her to speak her mind, and to do it with clarity, wit and subtlety delivered humor. She could lead a table conversation, a family prayer, and was not afraid to lead her own way.
Throughout her life, she studied and traveled widely, mothered four daughters, and handled the operations of her family’s farm.
Rosemary was born in May 9, 1928 in Trenton, Missouri, the eldest of Thomas and Maisy Layson’s three daughters. She left Trenton to attend the University of Arizona and was one of only two women accepted to the university in her class.
At the University of Arizona, Rosemary studied English and primary education. She took a steam ship across the Atlantic Ocean Europe to learn the Montessori teaching method. She spent her summers home from college filling in for reporters at Trenton’s local newspaper. When her mother became ill, Rosemary returned to Trenton and attended MU to complete her college degree.
She later moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and married Andrew George Peterson May 14, 1955. Rosemary and Andrew enjoyed a deep and loving relationship for 40 wonderful years. Together they raised four daughters: Sarah Lucinda, Rosemary, Heidi and Andrea. Rosemary served as a PTA president and Girl Scout troop leader.
Andrew died on Christmas Eve in 1995, and that night, Rosemary placed the hands of all present between hers and led the prayer.
Rosemary earned her masters in Social Work and, later in life, studied agriculture at North Central Missouri College. She was everything from a candy striper to a social welfare worker to a teacher. She pulled a third-generation family farm along with her into the 21st century.
Rosemary loved traveling, gardening, bridge, her fox terrier Abigail, and various really mean cats who loved only her over the years. For decades, she returned regularly to Arizona, where she spent family vacations and winters.
As a woman who attended college in the 1930’s, she expected no less from her daughters and grandchildren. In her perfect cursive, she penned cards and letters to her grandchildren that followed them over the years, from their mothers’ houses, to apartments, to homes of their own. She encouraged and supported their interests, their education, and later, their careers.
Rosemary married Milton Adams in 2000, and they enjoyed a loving and supportive relationship for 19 years until her death. Rosemary and Milton were members of the Central Methodist Church.
Rosemary died peacefully Sept. 9 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marcia Vencill; her husband, Andrew Peterson; and her daughter, Lucinda "Lucy" Peterson.
