French Army General. He rose rapidly in rank during the French Revolutionary Wars, serving as a division commander in the Grande Armée of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1805 and 1807, and played a leading role at the Battle of Friedland. In 1805 he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. In 1808 Napoleon appointed him a Count of the Empire and in November of that year, he served in the Peninsular War as governor of the fortress of Pamplona, Spain. A tall man, he became extremely obese later in life. He became renowned both for his bravery and for an astonishing capacity for eating and drinking. He died at the age of 44. His surname is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe.
