NORBERT URBAN O'CONNOR
(1927 - 2010)

Norbert Urban O'Connor, 82, Brillion, died on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1927, in Pittsfield to the late Urban and Josie (Sheedy) O'Connor. Norb grew up on a farm near Pulaski. He married Janice Racine on Aug. 18, 1956, at St. Peter and Paul in Green Bay.

His route to pharmacist had some unusual turns. He started as a shoe factory worker and moved on to become a loading dockworker at a railroad station. He then drove the Green Bay Library Bookmobile where he met his wife of 53 years, Miss Janice Racine. Norb drove the bookmobile for another nine months before being called to duty in the U.S. Army. He served two years as a platoon leader and medic. One of his superior officers suggested he go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the GI Bill.

He graduated in 1957 and completed an internship at Bill Buckley's Pharmacy in Green Bay, and then moved to Stern's Pharmacy in Winneconne. In 1963, he moved his wife and son Michael and daughter Shannon to Brillion. He bought Tanner's Pharmacy and eventually named it O'Connor Pharmacy. It remains O'Connor Pharmacy to this day.

Timothy, their third child, was born and was a welcomed addition to the family. Norb was involved in many civic endeavors, including: president of the Optimist Club (which he helped form), served as president of the Lions Club, president of the Brillion Chamber of Commerce and was forefront in building the Brillion Community Center. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion, Brillion American Legion Post 126, and the Calumet County Civic Association. He worked as a pharmacist for over 40 years. Norb loved to tend the trees and flowerbeds in his park-like lawn. He loved playing golf, playing with his grandchildren and dancing the polka. His many friends, colleagues, employees and, most of all, his loving family will miss him.

Survivors include: his wife Janice; daughter Shannon O'Connor of Madison and friend Jim Horn; two sons: Michael John (Liz) O'Connor of Chicago, Timothy Patrick (Lori) O'Connor of De Pere; three grandchildren: Calleigh, Mikey and Erin; a brother Lyle (Betty) O'Connor of Pulaski. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law Leo (Esther) O'Connor.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion. The Rev. Mathew Simonar will officiate. Friends may call at the Wieting Funeral Home in Brillion on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and then at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Norbert's name.
