RAYMOND A. IRWIN

Raymond A. Irwin, age 86, of Adrian, Mich., died Feb. 23, 2006.

He was born to Asa Christopher and Nellie (Brood) Irwin on July 4, 1919, in Rudyard, Mich., near Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

In 1927, he moved with his family to Milwaukee, where he eventually graduated from Boy's Technical High School. In the late 1930's, he was an avid model builder, particularly, detailed model airplanes and automobiles. His award-winning work was on display at the General Motors exhibit of the 1939 New York World's Fair and at the Milwaukee Museum. Raymond served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. During that period, he flew 50 combat missions in B-26 Marauder Bombers based in North Africa.

In February 1944, he married Evelyn R. Jones. After the war, he worked for Ira Jones, a Milwaukee patent attorney, as a patent draftsman. In 1952, Raymond and his family moved to Manitowoc, where he began a rewarding career at Kaysun Plastics, a manufacturer of injection molded plastic parts. He retired 33 years later, in 1985, as vice president of engineering. In 2001, he and his wife Evelyn moved from Manitowoc to Adrian, Mich. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, Mich.

He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn of 62 years and his son, Christopher Irwin; daughter-in-law Judity Irwin; grandson Jeffrey Irwin and his wife Nicole; and grandson Bryan Irwin. His parents, brothers Harold and Clifford; and sister Mary Titus preceded him in death.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangement have been entrusted to Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, Mich.
