The son of Herbert and Sarah Ayton, Arthur enlisted in the 2/29 Battalion A.I.F. at Burnie, Tasmania on 22 October 1940.

Prior to capitulation he was transferred to the 2/26 Battalion, from which he was selected as part of "B" Force.

Japanese POW No 388, Arthur Ayton was a member of the 1st Death March, during which he died 2 miles east of Tampias from Cardiac Beri-Beri.

He is commemorated on Panel 16 of Labuan Memorial, at the Australian War Memorial; the ANZAC Memorial at Ulverstone Tasmania and the Ex-P.O.W. Memorial Wall at Ballarat.
