Japanese Emperor. Also known as Prince Takaharu, he became the 96th emperor of Japan, ruling from 1319 to 1339. He is known best for his efforts to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate by forming an alliance with powerful warriors Masashige Kusunoki and Takauji Ashikaga in 1333. Because he felt poorly compensated, Ashikaga subsequently drove Go-Daigo from the capital of Kyoto to a point of refuge in Yoshino. After engaging in a civil war with the forces of Komyo, a second emperor appointed by Ashikaga, he ultimately abdicated in favor of his son, Go-Murakami, and died the following day.
