Mary Grace Antonucci-Thomas (nee Agro), 97, returned to her Heavenly Father on Sept. 20, 2019, while under the care of Bradenton Hospice House, Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Florida.
Mary was born on July 7, 1922, in her parents' home on Willowbrook Road, Staten Island, in a time when pastures were plentiful. She grew up raising goats, chickens, and dogs. She resided on Staten Island until 2012, moved to the Fishkill, New York area settled in Bradenton, Florida.
Mary found herself a widow at thirty-eight, raising her four children as a single mother. Mary was among the first applicants to reapply when the Social Security Survival Benefit Laws changed in the late 1960s. Under the new law, Mary successfully qualified her children for Social Security Benefits as minors in the United States, receiving their first benefit check in March of 1963.
Mary was a faithful, lifetime member of the Catholic Church. She was a life-long learner and her conscientious work and study earned her a Bachelor of Arts Degree in her sixties. Mary loved to write poetry, draw and paint using any medium. She absolutely loved playing the piano, dancing, attending the theater, gardening, eating and shopping in Manhattan's Chinatown. Mary was involved with the VFW Post on Staten Island. Her tenacity and strong will served her well as she dealt with the many adversity's life sent her way.
Mary's husband, Salvatore A. Antonucci, who passed away on March 17, 1960, predeceases her, as well as, her eldest daughter Salvatrice Ann Fornaciari on May 3, 2015. Mary was also predeceased by her parents, Anna Grace Provenzano and Charles Agro, and three brothers, John Agro, Louis Agro, and Sammy Agro.
Three of Mary's children survive her: Gilda Marie "Cookie" (Antonucci) Barron and her husband, Royce, of Cottonwood, Arizona, Charles John Antonucci and his wife, Grace of Queens, New York, and Frances Ann Antonucci of Potsdam, New York. Mary also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A scholarship fund was founded in 2004 at St. John's University in honor of Mary's husband Salvatore Antonucci. The scholarship funds are used to assist their student body with yearly tuitions. Donations may be sent to - The Salvatore Antonucci Memorial Internship Fund c/o St John's University, 8000 Utopia Blvd., Queens, New York 11439.
