Copied from the Platte Purchase Paradise, the story of Washington Township, Nodaway County, Missouri. page 9 by Anna Lee Walter 1976.

"In the depths of the White Oak Grove is the final resting place of some who have gone before us. Recollection is that a rail fence on the south side identified the location of about 30 tombstones, only two are visible now. One marks Robert J. Gray, age 34, died 1854. The other Lucy, wife of Guilford Richards-remember me as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I."

We first find Lafayette Irwin in the 1850 US Census, District 64, Nodaway County, Missouri age 15 born in Missouri. Lafayette is living with his mother Joanna Irwin age 50 born in Tennessee and three sisters, Elizabeth Irwin age 17 born in Missouri, Rachel Irwin age 13 born in Missouri and Missouri Irwin age 9 born in Missouri. Lafayette married Rachel Mahala Allen in 1853 Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri. They had four children James Washington Irwin born 1854, Rachel Mary F. Irwin born 1855, Samuel Allen Irwin born 1859 and Delilah Irwin born 1861. Taken from the book of "Seven Generation of Allens" by Maud B. Allen. "Lafayette would take neither side of the war, remaining neutral. On the way back he was seized by a group of vigilantes and murdered. They took his body to his home and threw it across the threshold. The above story was told to this researcher many times. All efforts to follow the children's lives have been without success. By Maud B. Allen"
