Raymond V. "Ray" Burton, 86, a resident of 1524 Patchel Run Road, Franklin, Pa., died peacefully at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, with his family by his side, in Orchard Manor of Grove City, following a period of declining health.
He was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Butler, a beloved son of the late Raymond E. and Dorothy May Wilson Burton.
Following high school, Ray served his country as a proud member of the U.S. Air Force. He earned rank of Airman Second Class during the Korean War era. For service to his country, he was awarded The Air Crew Member Badge, as well as The National Defense Service Medal.
Ray retired in 1992 from AFSCME Council 85, where he worked for more than 20 years as a Union Business Agent. In 1995, he and his wife spent the next 10 years traveling in their motor home leading caravans into Mexico. Subsequent winters were spent in Texas, until buying a home in Winter Haven, Fla., where they had spent the winters since 2013.
Ray enjoyed golf, old TV shows, antique/classic cars, traveling/camping in his motor home, and woodworking, having made several pieces of furniture for his family and friends.
As a 32nd-degree Mason, Ray was a member of John E. Mair Lodge 729 of Mars, the Accepted Scottish Rite of New Castle and Accepted Scottish Rite of Oil City consistories.
He was married June 27, 1987, to the former Joyce Engel, who survives.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a daughter, Vicky (Patrick) Suhrie of Mercer; three sons: Leon (Cindy) Burton of Harrisville; Timothy (Kathi) Burton of Mercer; Ronald (Michele) Burton of Burgettstown and by his step-son, Kevin (Lynea) Carson of Cooperstown; and 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers: Edward R. Burton of Verona and Wilson H. Burton of Pittsburgh; and a sister, Dora Giammatteo of Gibsonia; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Burton; a sister, Ethel May Burton, and by his brother, Elmer G. Burton.
