John Chester Abbott, 74, of Woodville went peacefully to be with the Lord on October 6, 2019. He died in the veteran's hospital in Houston following a battle with cancer.

John was born June 10, 1945 to Chester and Lillian Hurst Abbott in Stockport, Cheshire England. He and his mother came across the Atlantic Ocean on the Ship Queen Anne, which was a two week trip. They arrived in New York and then traveled to Texas.

John lived in Woodville, Texas, until he completed high school and then joined the United States Marines on January 29, 1963. He was a proud marine until he suffered a gunshot wound to his knee on March 24, 1966 in Vietnam. He continued as a reserve and received many medals while serving his country including the Purple Heart. John retired from Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur.

He is preceded in death by his parents. Chester and Lillian Abbott; wife, Callie Abbott; and granddaughter, Lexi Abbott.

Survivors include his son, John Toby Abbott of Vidor; daughter Wendy Abbott of Lumberton; grandchildren, Devin and Christian; sisters, Margie Sanford of Hemphill, Sharon Fuller of Woodville; brothers, Bill Abbott of Hemphill, Robert Abbott of Woodville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Graveside services will be held at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Woodville on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 10AM.
