Edith (Ellis) Gilliam was a daughter of Charles Ellis and Susannah (Harding) Ellis and was the wife of Devereux Gilliam. She was a learned woman, a member of the Lebanon-in-the-Forks Church and was likely among those women who buried Elizabeth Carrick, the wife of the church's first pastor, while all the men in the area were away. The men were attempting to ambush a group of 1000 Cherokees and Creeks who had threatened to come and depopulate the area. A squabble developed between the different Indian groups over whether they would kill everyone, or just the men. They ultimately attacked Cavet's Station seven miles from Knoxville and killed everyone, after which, they fractured and went back to their homes.
