Frank, born in New Orleans, was the only son of William Smith of Denmark and Mary Winter of Norway. He married Emma Watkins of England in 1867 in Franklin, LA. They had 5 children before she died in December 1878. He then married Charlotte Frances Wright on 20 Dec 1880 in Morgan City, LA. They had 7 children before she died in 1915. He owned and ran a machine shop on the Atchafalaya River front in Berwick serving the marine, timber, and sugar industries.

The late Dewey Brown of Berwick kept records that account for a large number of "lost" graves in Willow Grove Cemetery. According to his records, Frank Smith either died or was buried there on 10 Dec 1917 at age 72 years. The Town of Berwick kept old cash receipts ledgers showing payment for grave plots in Willow Grove Cemetery. There is an entry on 10 Dec 1917 for payment of $5 for "Grave Frank Thomas Smith." As of 1995, no marker remains within the cemetery.
